Obituary of Barbara Washko

Barbara Jean Washko, age 73, of Columbus, NJ passed away on January 24, 2019. She was a very beloved Grandma and mother. She leaves behind her mother, Margaret Honis; son Christopher, daughter-in-law Elizabeth, grandsons Wyatt and Dylan; daughter Martine Washko-Shallo and son-in-law Marc Shallo. Her loving husband of 50 years, Mark Washko, and her beloved father, George Honis, predeceased her. Barbara met Mark Washko when she was 17 years old and always said that "she knew she was going to marry him the moment she met him." They were married on April 23, 1965 and he was the love of her life. Barbara always said that she got married so she could have babies. And she did just that, having Christopher and Martine. She loved being their mother and taking care of them. She taught her children to be creative, to lead with confidence and conviction, and to live life with attention to the joy inherent in every moment. In their early-married years, Mark served in the United States Air Force, which took them to Texas, Illinois and New Jersey – where they stayed and lived most of their lives. Barbara was a very hard worker and took pride in her work as an Administrative Assistant. She last worked at the Princeton, NJ law offices of Goldstein and Hertz for over 10 years. The greatest joy in Barbara's life was spending time with her family – especially her grandchildren, Wyatt and Dylan. She loved making trips to Nashville to visit them and watch them play baseball. Barbara was well-known for her fabulous cooking and baking and she loved nothing more than making sure her family and guests were well-fed and taken care of. One of the things her family will remember and miss the most were her special Christmas Eve dinners of lobster and pierogies. She also loved summertime and enjoyed the beach at Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ and spending time at the pool. Her other hobbies included gardening and book club. Funeral services will be held Wednesday 12:00 PM at Koschek and Porter Funeral Directors, 1115 Hornberger Avenue, Roebling with Deacon Ronald Schwoebel officiating. Friends may call Wednesday from 11:00 AM until the time of service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Holy Assumption Cemetery, Roebling. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the Surfrider Foundation, Jersey Shore Chapter in Barbara's name, to help keep her beloved beaches clean.
